Project#1

Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Abstract Designs

You are to create three (3) symmetrical and three (3) asymmetrical

abstract designs using cut black paper attached to Bristol paper

(a half sheet). Attach all of the shapes using only scotch tape. Once

the design is critiqued the shapes are to be attached with rubber cement.

Project Criteria

The designs must contain:

  1. All geometric shapes
  2. The shapes of the positive space must be repeated within the negative space
  3. 30-50% of the design must be negative space
  4. A focal-point, and hierarchical arrangement of shapes
  5. “Visual flow,” or “rhythmic motion”
  6. Contrast in scale – big, medium, small and minute

Grading

25 points Class participation (sharing thoughts during discussions)

50 points Successfully addressing the criteria

25 points Craftsmanship and evidence of strong work ethic

Principles of Art & Design

Unity, Variety, Hierarchy, Proportion

Support Principles:

Scale, Balance, Rhythm, Repetition, Proximity

Elements of Art & Design

Shape, Space, Point, Line, Size, Color, Texture, Typography
